Policy and Procedures
There are three essential needs for long term care facilities to have in order to have the opportunity for success – consistency, consistency, consistency. Far too many policies and procedures are reactionary, often to unfounded accusations or barely logical interpretations. The mindset when contemplating a revision of policies must be with the goal to corral that all elusive element - common sense. The procedures must not be so restrictive that the facility staff cannot adhere to them in everyday practice. Thus, the problem then becomes not the ability to comply with the already restrictive regulations, but the inability to come close to complying with the facility’s procedures themselves. Those who have a punitive nature should void involvement in writing these documents, only those with a reasonable disposition should apply.
